Carrying a baby and giving birth is a crucial event in the life of a woman. During pregnancy a woman’s body undergoes loads of changes, which mainly include extra weight gain and hormonal changes.
For at least first six months of post pregnancy a woman should concentrate on eating healthy food instead of weight loss because the new born is completely dependent on the mother’s diet. The new mother should feed the baby by her breast milk for minimum 6 months. For breast feeding a well balanced diet is required as it burns up a lot of calories and if good diet not taken then it can even rob your infant with necessary nutrients.
Below are certain tips for the well balanced diet for a new mother:
- To start with, the breakfast can include-idlis made of unpolished rice accompanied by coconut chutney, dosa and whole wheat or multigrain bread. Fresh fruit juice can be added to the breakfast meal but it should not contain ice in order to protect the mother and new born from cough and cold.
- You can include a cup of tea (specially green tea) between your main course meals as herbs in tea will refresh and energize the body and mind.
- After an evening walk, drinking cup of coconut water, carrot juice, melon or cucumber juice will help in retaining the water balance.
- Post delivery it is it is important to eat the food cooked with cumin (jeera) and pepper in order to restore the energy after some sort of physical work like bathing, etc.
- A new mother’s diet would ideally include high diet proteins like meat, fish and eggs, at least four to five fruits and vegetables, milk, cheese and yoghurts and at least eight to nine glasses of water per day.
- The breast feeding mothers should eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, avoid caffeine and sugar.
- Breastfeeding mothers may consume a dish known as “Gur Jeera” made by cooking jaggery(Gur) with cumin(Jeera) which increases the milk formation in the breasts.
- Khichri, Pulao, Paratha and Chapati are the items made from wheat and rice which may be taken alternately as they will supply your need for carbohydrates.
- Mothers can take vegetable soups in the evening snacks.
- A nursing mother should not overindulge in fried snacks and fizzy drinks. She should also avoid overly spicy foods. One should avoid chillies altogether.
- A nursing mother should avoid aerated drinks and canned juices and all types of canned food, if possible. The canned foods contain sodium and preservatives which is neither good for the mother, nor for the new-born baby.
- The Indian dinner diet can be a smaller meal, with just soup, little ghee and hot rice, some green leafy vegetable curry and curd.
- A glass of hot plain skimmed milk at night will complete the whole day post pregnancy diet of a mother.
It is of paramount importance that you plan your diet well after the delivery. A balanced diet means you include food in your diet containing all the major vitamins, proteins and carbohydrates. A breast-feeding mother should make it sure to eat a variety of cereals and milk products in order to feed her new born.
